General Questions

A Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) equipped with specialized training in Psychiatry and Mental Health. With a graduate education and clinical training, a PMHNP excels in assessing, diagnosing, and treating Psychiatric and Mental Health Disorders. Operating both independently and collaboratively with other health professionals, a PMHNP offers a comprehensive array of services. This encompasses the diagnosis of psychiatric and mental health disorders, prescription of medications for treatment, and the provision of psychotherapy and patient education, among other aspects.

Yes, there are certain limitations in our prescription practices. While we can prescribe most psychiatric medications, we currently refrain from prescribing controlled substances such as Stimulants, Muscle relaxants, or Benzodiazepines in adherence to state/federal regulations governing telehealth. It is recommended to consult a primary care physician (PCP), pediatrician, or an established psychiatrist for such prescriptions. This policy may change once we begin onsite consultations. Additionally, we acknowledge the potential risks of physiological dependence with specific medications and, as an ethical practice, do not prescribe them at this time. In states where Nurse Practitioners require a delegation agreement with a physician, we have such an agreement in place with a psychiatrist whom we regularly consult with to review cases.
